Meaningful change doesn’t happen alone.

While there are many seeds of wisdom in truth scattered in the field of the “self-care” industry (heck, I wrote a book with it in the title!), one of the pitfalls of this philosophy is enforcing a belief that each of us is individually responsible for both the causes of and solutions to our imbalances. Taking responsibility for our daily choices is one thing, but ignoring the systemic forces behind financial, health, environmental, relational, and other stressors puts an undue burden on each of us. It also denies us the tremendous power of being supported, and challenged, by community for the sake of individual and collective growth.

In the traditions of yoga and Āyurveda that I follow, daily rituals are at the heart of how we achieve what we call “self-care.” Through focus, discipline, and adaptability, we undergo radical transformations at all levels of our experience—body, mind, and spirit; thought, emotion, sensation; rhythm, circulation, integration—that help us stay resilient in the face of life’s uncertainties, and trusting in our inherent stability and wholeness. But this “self” doesn’t practice for personal gain, acknowledgment, or even “improvement.” Rather, the Self that is nourished, cleansed, and revealed through this work is empowered to perform their sacred dharma without doubt (though not always without struggle); to offer the gifts of their expertise, experience, skills, and presence to those who need it; to be a vessel through which the Source of our one Breath, one Heart, and one Mind flows freely and without limits or constraints. This Self doesn’t perform “care” but is “care” incarnate—and by example encourages everyone around them to take care of them-Selves with the tenderness and devotion we all deserve.

This path may sound lofty and esoteric, but it begins with the most ordinary, often overlooked, parts of our existence: our senses. Our ears, skin, eyes, nose, and mouth are vital portals to both the rich and radiant inner landscape of our higher Self, and to the pleasures and pains of our material reality. By caring for our senses daily, with attention and intention, we strengthen our ability to move between managing the stressors and requirements of life, and abiding in our fundamental, divine wholeness. Through our senses, we experience the full spectrum of our existence as the union of consciousness and matter—helping us live more of our days in a state of awareness, actively participating in our lives rather than simply getting by.

No matter where you are on the Self-care journey—whether you’re looking to change your diet, move more, or stop substituting caffeine for sleep; for support in aligning with a deeper calling and committing to the “middle path” in rebellion to the excesses of capitalism and hustle-culture; or for a more guided path through the teachings and practices offered in Sense-Care is Self-Care—the Sense-Care is Self-Care Community Book Club offers a sacred container for discovering and sustaining the daily practices that will help you be the beacon of care guiding you and those around you toward health and integration. Spending time with one sense at a time, we’ll move at the slower, methodical pace necessary to create sustainable changes and observe the effects of new routines with a scientist’s discerning eye. Through education, group discussion, practical tools for application, and embodied practice, you’ll receive the expert guidance, accountability, and grace you need to finally stop spiraling out—escaping, ignoring, or numbing yourself from the challenges of life, and clinging to sensation and external validation as proof of your worth—and finally start spiraling in—feeling your aliveness, at all levels and in every flavor.
