This. Is. Happening.

The winter solstice is often celebrated as the longest night of the year. But it's just as potent for what happens on the other side of the darkness—the sun, that slowly starts to spend more time in the sky (in the Northern Hemisphere) after the solstice.

I'll be saluting the sun 108 times (!) at Arise Yoga on December 20. You should come. No, it won't be 108 chaturangas, but we will be circulating some *major* energy—so bring whatever you don't want to hold onto for 2024 and we'll burn it up 🌞🔥✨🧘🏻‍♀️ You can also follow me next door and across the street for coffee and bagels after, and greet the day like the true winter warrior you are 💙

Oh hey 👋🏼

It's been a minute since I posted anything meaningful; I've been working through a mysterious illness that seems to be somewhat on the mend at present. I thought it was interesting how, at the precise time when I thought I'd want to be mindlessly scrolling—during legit couch time, dipping in and out of naps—I almost never opened Instagram. Funny how the universe shows you what is important, right?

Illness (and injury) have always been my most profound teachers. So fitting (though uncomfortable) that this month, December, I'm circling back to my word of 2023: teach. I began January with an intention to get back to in-person yoga classes, which happened (and more exciting news on that front soon...!). I'm also teaching more Ayurveda and workshops, which was a boon. Most of all, though, I've been humbled by the fact that teaching is inextricably tied to student-dom. Teachers need students (ask any yoga teacher who showed up for class and zero people arrived); but teachers also need to BE students. This year, I made some scary, but satisfying, moves in my life that were really tests of whether I could walk my talk as an Ayurvedic and yoga practitioner. If I ask people to change their lives, but I can't do it myself, what kind of teacher am I?

This month, I'll be reflecting not only on what I've learned and accomplished as a teacher, but committing even more deeply to the pre-teacher, student layer of my being. Anyone who knows me knows that I have no problem in that role, so it's not so much about taking an additional class or training program (though I did sign up for 2 edX classes at my alma mater on a whim Thanksgiving weekend...so I have that to do!). It's more about avoiding prajnaparadha—which translates to "crimes against wisdom," aka when you know something is bad and do it anyway. Can I learn from my 2023 illnesses and injuries, of which there were many, to enact my favorite yoga sutra, heyam duhkham anagatam (future pain is avoidable)? Can I teach myself?
