In yoga, the front side of the body is considered the “east”—since traditionally the practice is done facing the rising sun, the direction of beginnings, activity, action. The back side, naturally, is the “west”—the direction that moves us towards endings and rest.

We can see this energetic connection in the typical approach to certain types of postures: Backbends, which crack open the front of the body and (supposedly) invigorate us, versus forward folds, which stretch (mostly passively) the back side and can wind us down at the end of practice moving toward corpse pose (our mini-death practice).

But what if we had it backwards? What if we approached beginnings as something that came to us, rather than what we have to chase and prove ourselves worthy of? What if the back side—the west, the rest—was the strong, invigorating side, moving us forward with a reality that we’ll never be able to see with our own eyes?
