I haven’t been home that much this summer, but my herb garden has been thriving even in my absence. Yesterday I harvested huge bundles of lemon balm, oregano, thyme, and rue that are now on their way to becoming medicine (I couldn’t resist a cup of fresh lemon balm tea, though).

Studying herbalism has made me realize that there’s incredible medicine to having herbs in your space, not just consuming them. That’s why I love drying them in artful ways—and in this space, framing my mirrors with herbs helps them not only dry but changes the quality of the reflection I see when I look into the glass. The healing goes both ways, and is both art and alchemy.

FULL MOON // It's the fourth and final supermoon of 2023—last call for clearing out! This is the perfect opportunity to extend any Fall Equinox rituals that felt incomplete (or didn't quite happen yet). If you need inspiration, try this.

Known as the Harvest Moon, this moon's light and nourishment can help us reflect on what's taken place so far in our lives this year. For my business people, think of it as a Q4 audit. Use the mantra "first thought, best thought" to make 3 lists:
🌟 Blessings (things that have come to you with a positive outcome or for which you have gratitude, even if it didn't seem so at first)
🌟 Transitions (things that you are letting go of, or that have let go of you, leaving you more space to be in alignment with truth), and
🌟 Non-Expectations (a list of goals/dreams/wishes, but under the banner of nonattachment).
Use the same number of items for each list (which might help you curate with discernment!), and leave 2-3 empty spots on the Non-Expectations list for the unknown. Share your experience with this practice in the comments!

Before I told myself "no more signing up for class

Before I told myself "no more signing up for classes this year," I signed up for Studies in Ojas with Dr. Scott Blossom. (I promise, after this no more!! I even said no to a bunch of things already, so I'm proud of myself #winning.) We are just getting started on a 6-month journey of cultivating juciness, which has been a personal project of mine for most of my life; as a vata constitution, I'm fundamentally dry (as a kid, when I was asked what my superpower would be I'd say "moisture girl"—skin always soft, never needing lotion...I'm serious! Ask @samkurdyla). My Jyotish chart also revealed that my water element is basically nonexistent, which makes this work feel like the kind of impossible challenge I love most.

I'm taking inspiration from one of the images Dr. Scott shared in our opening class about symbols of ojas, namely the deer. This gentle creature is skittish but highly sensitive, with a stronger sense of hearing than sight. This reminded me of what we learned in our summer program—how the Sun's wife, literally burned out by his intensity, escaped into the forest to become a deer. While I can't become another species (yet!), I can harness my own powers of sensitivity for self-preservation, and not be ashamed of that.

It's been extremely challenging at times, especially this year, to listen to the truth in my heart—the seat of ojas—and act on it without outside chatter, or my own willful vision of my life, getting in the way. But I'm taking the discomfort I’ve felt in doing so as a sign I'm on the right path— the path that leads me into the deep dark woods or into a magical grove full of dappled light and fairies—or the suburbs 🤣
